Sunday Recap

Joshua closes his life with two speeches (Joshua 23 to leaders; Joshua 24 to all Israel). Though Israel is enjoying rest and the inheritance of the land, Joshua warns that ease creates a new kind of danger: their devotion can soften and rival gods can creep in. He calls them to three ongoing practices: remember God’s faithfulness (“It is the LORD your God who has fought for you… not one word has failed”), recognize and put away rival gods (“cling to the LORD your God… be careful to love the LORD”), and renew their commitment (“Choose this day whom you will serve… as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD”). The sermon connected this to life now: difficulty often reveals dependence, but ease tests allegiance. Ultimately, determination alone cannot produce lifelong devotion; Jesus—the greater Joshua—gives us the Spirit and grace needed for wholehearted allegiance.

Understanding the Text

  • In their original context, Israel stands in a season of rest and abundance; Joshua warns that prosperity can invite divided allegiance. The call is covenant loyalty, not casual add-on religion.

  • “Cling” (Joshua 23:8) echoes marriage covenant language (Genesis 2:24): God seeks exclusive, loyal love, not occasional assistance.

  • Joshua’s “Choose this day” (24:15) is followed by a sober warning (24:19): quick enthusiasm isn’t enough. Lifelong allegiance requires daily renewal and God’s power.

3. GROUPS OF 3–4 | 25–30 MINUTES

Break into groups of 3–4.

Question 1 — UNDERSTAND

In Joshua 23–24, why does Joshua press Israel to “remember,” “put away” rival gods, and “choose this day,” especially when life is going well? What does this reveal about life with God?

Question 2 — PERSONALIZE

Where do you notice your own allegiance softening in seasons of ease? What “rival gods” (sources of security, significance, peace) are you tempted to turn to first when stressed, afraid, lonely, or tired?

Question 3 — PRACTICE

What is one concrete step you will take this week to renew your daily allegiance to Jesus? Consider Neartown’s framework:

  • Surrender: What do you need to put away?

  • Train: What rhythm will help you “remember” (e.g., listing God’s faithfulness each morning for 7 days)?

Who can belong with you in this step (invite someone to encourage or check in)?

Leader Instructions

  • Give groups 20–25 minutes for the three questions.

  • Encourage everyone to participate.

  • Don’t rush. Deep conversation beats finishing all questions.

  • If a significant need surfaces, pause and pray for that person right then.

4. COME BACK TOGETHER | 10–15 MINUTES

Ask: “What was one thing that stood out from your conversation?”

  • Invite several people to share.

  • Connect themes back to the passage and Big Idea: “God’s faithfulness to us deserves our allegiance in every season.”

  • Offer brief clarifications from the Leader Toolbox if helpful; avoid turning this into a teaching time.

5. PRACTICE + PRAYER | 10–15 MINUTES

Return to the practical response from Question 3.

Ask: “Based on what we’ve talked about tonight, what do you want to carry into this week?”

  • Encourage concrete responses: “This week, I will __________.”

  • Thank God: “Father, thank you that not one word of your good promises has failed.”

  • Surrender/Training: “Spirit, help us put away rival gods and cling to you with loyal love; train us to remember your faithfulness daily.”

Joshua’s call exposes our inability to sustain wholehearted allegiance by ourselves. Jesus, the greater Joshua, perfectly loved the Father and resisted every rival god. Through his cross and resurrection, he establishes a new covenant, forgives divided hearts, gives us a new heart, and places the Spirit within us. Our daily “choose this day” is possible only through the strength God supplies.
