Walk Worthy
NEARTOWN CHURCH | LOOP GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE | OCTOBER 11, 2026
Scripture: Ephesians 4:1–16
Big Idea: God has made us one, and he calls us to live like it.
This Week's Goal: Help participants understand that Christian unity is something God has already established through Christ, and that our differences can strengthen the church rather than divide it. Encourage each person to take one practical step toward loving someone whose differences they find challenging.
LEADER PREP WORK
Before your group meets:
Read Ephesians 4:1–16.
Review this discussion guide.
Consider where your group may be experiencing differences, tension, or opportunities to grow together.
Identify anyone who may need encouragement or follow-up.
Pray for your people by name.
Remember: You don't need to teach another sermon, answer every question, or cover every detail. Follow meaningful conversations as they develop. The guide serves the people; the people do not serve the guide.
1. CONNECT | 10–15 MINUTES
Opening Question
What's something you really enjoy that other people just don't seem to understand?
Leader Note: Keep this fun and lighthearted. Encourage everyone to share. The goal is to get people talking and recognize how different we can be, even in ordinary things.
2. TEXT | 20–25 MINUTES
Read Together: Ephesians 4:1–16
Invite different people to read verses 1–6, 7–12, and 13–16.
Sunday Recap
In Ephesians 1–3, Paul explains what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. Beginning in chapter 4, he turns to how we should live in response to God's grace. He urges believers to walk in a manner worthy of their calling, especially through humility, gentleness, patience, and love.
Jake's main idea was: "God has made us one, and he calls us to live like it."
He explained that unity doesn't require everyone to become the same. Our unity is rooted in the one God we share, and Christ has intentionally given different gifts to his people so the entire church can grow toward maturity.
Rather than allowing differences to divide us, we're called to recognize how God can use those differences to strengthen his church.
Understanding the Text
- Verses 1–3: Walk worthy. Paul's command follows everything God has already accomplished in chapters 1–3. We don't live worthy lives to earn God's grace. We live in response to the grace we've received. Notice that Paul immediately emphasizes how we treat one another.
- Verses 4–6: Maintain unity. Paul uses the word one seven times. Our unity is rooted in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We aren't commanded to create unity, but to maintain what God has already established.
- Verses 7–16: Grow together. Christ gives different gifts to his people, including leaders who equip believers for ministry. The goal isn't simply individual spiritual growth, but the maturity of the entire church as each person contributes.
3. GROUPS OF 3–4 | 25–30 MINUTES
Divide into smaller groups of three or four people.
Question 1 — UNDERSTAND
SCRIPTURE
In Ephesians 4:1–16, what do you notice about how God has designed the church to experience unity while its members remain different? What does that tell us about God's purpose for the church?
Question 2 — PERSONALIZE
REFLECTION
When you encounter someone whose personality, opinions, or approach to life differs from yours, are you more likely to push for agreement or create distance? How has that tendency affected your relationships?
Question 3 — PRACTICE
OBEDIENCE
Who is one person whose differences you tend to experience as a burden rather than a gift? What specific step could you take this week to move toward that person in humility, patience, or love?
Leader Instructions: Allow approximately 20–25 minutes for these questions. Encourage everyone to participate, but don't rush meaningful conversation. If someone shares a significant struggle, consider stopping to pray for them right then.
4. COME BACK TOGETHER | 10–15 MINUTES
Bring everyone back into the larger group.
Ask: “What was one thing that stood out from your conversation?”
Allow several people to share. Listen for recurring themes about unity, differences, and the challenge of loving people who aren't like us.
Connect the conversation back to the Big Idea: God has made us one, and he calls us to live like it.
Leader Note: You don't need every group to report on every question. Focus on what was meaningful rather than covering everything.
5. PRACTICE + PRAYER | 10–15 MINUTES
Return to the practical response from Question 3.
Ask: “Based on what we've talked about tonight, what do you want to carry into this week?”
Invite participants to complete this sentence:
This week, I will. Encourage people to name a specific person and action rather than making a general commitment to be more loving.
Prayer Prompts
Thank God for making us one through Jesus Christ and welcoming us into his family.
Ask God to grow humility, gentleness, patience, and love in us, especially when relationships are difficult.
Pray for Neartown Church to become a community where our different gifts strengthen the whole body and display the reconciling power of Jesus.
Leader Note: Prayer doesn't have to wait until the end. If someone shares something significant, consider asking, “Can we pray for you about that right now?”
LEADER TOOLBOX
For preparation and reference. This is not additional material you need to teach.
Key Sermon Insights
The worthy walk is a response to grace. Paul's "therefore" connects our conduct to everything God has already accomplished in Christ.
Unity is maintained, not manufactured. Jesus has already broken down the dividing wall of hostility and brought us together into one family.
Unity does not require sameness. Jake used three relational patterns to explain this: fusion sacrifices individuality for connection, cutoff sacrifices connection for individuality, and healthy differentiation maintains both.
Spiritual gifts are for the whole church. Christ gives different gifts and leaders to equip his people so that every member contributes to the body's growth.
Maturity requires truth and love. The church grows toward Christlikeness as its members speak the truth in love and work together under Christ, the head.
Memorable Lines from Jake's Sermon
“God has made us one, and he calls us to live like it.”
“Unity does not require the elimination of distinction.”
“Sometimes what we experience as a burden in another person is actually a gift we haven't learned how to receive.”
“God has made us one, but he hasn't made us the same.”
Gospel Connection
Our deepest problem wasn't simply division from one another, but separation from God because of sin. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus reconciles us to God and makes us one people. Because our identity and belonging are secure in Christ, we're free to forgive, humble ourselves, and love people who are different from us.
Support + Challenge
SUPPORT: You don't have to earn your place in God's family by becoming like everyone else. In Christ, you already belong, and God has given you something valuable to contribute.
CHALLENGE: Is there someone you've been avoiding or dismissing because they're different from you, and what would it look like to move toward them in love this week?
