08-30 Sermon Discussion: Belonging, Surrendering, Training, and Multiplying

BELONGING, SURRENDERING, TRAINING, AND MULTIPLYING

Scripture: Matthew 4:18-22

Big Idea:

People are changed as they follow Jesus in real life, and over time, they help others do the same through four ongoing movements: Belong, Surrender, Train, and Multiply.

This Week’s Goal:

To help people identify which of the four discipleship movements (Belong, Surrender, Train, Multiply) needs their attention right now and to commit to one practical next step.

LEADER PREP WORK

Before the group:

  1. Read Matthew 4:18-22.

  2. Review this discussion guide.

  3. Think about your people. Who might be feeling lonely and need to belong? Who might be wrestling with giving God control and need to surrender? Who feels stuck and needs to train? Who is ready to multiply?

  4. Identify anyone who may need encouragement or follow-up.

  5. Pray for your people by name.

Reminders for you:

  • You do not need to use every piece of information in this guide.

  • You do not need to teach everything you learned from the sermon.

  • You do not need to have the answer to every question.

  • Follow meaningful conversations when they develop.

  • The guide serves the people; the people do not serve the guide.

1. CONNECT | 10–15 MINUTES

Opening Question

What is something you learned how to do from a parent or other mentor that you can still do today (e.g., driving, cooking a certain dish, a specific skill)?

Leader Note: Try to get everyone’s voice into the room during this section. Participation early makes participation later easier.

2. TEXT | 20–25 MINUTES

Read

Ask a few people to read aloud from Matthew 4:18-22.

Sunday Recap

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, Pastor Russell preached a sermon titled “This Is How Life with Jesus Works.” He explained that if we want different results in our spiritual lives, we can’t just try harder—we need to look at our system for following Jesus. He introduced Neartown’s discipleship framework, which consists of four ongoing movements: Belong, Surrender, Train, and Multiply.

Using the story of Jesus calling his first disciples in Matthew 4, Pastor Russell showed how these four movements are present from the very beginning. Jesus called busy fishermen into a community (Belong), asked them to leave everything and follow him (Surrender), promised to transform them (“I will make you…”) (Train), and gave them a new mission to gather people into God’s kingdom (Multiply). The goal is not just to attend church, but to actively participate with Jesus in these four movements to experience the peace of life with him.

Understanding the Text

  • In that culture, disciples usually chose their rabbi. Here, Jesus takes the initiative—He sees them, approaches them, and calls them in the middle of their busy, ordinary lives.

  • The disciples’ response was “immediately.” This highlights the urgency and total-life claim of Jesus’ call. It wasn’t just an invitation to add a new activity; it was a call to re-center their entire lives around him.

  • Jesus’ promise, “I will make you fishers of men,” shows that transformation is His work. He calls them as they are and promises to train them for a new purpose.

3. GROUPS OF 3–4 | 25–30 MINUTES

Break into smaller groups and discuss the following questions.

Question 1 — UNDERSTAND

The sermon outlined four movements of following Jesus: Belong (being known in community), Surrender (giving Jesus authority), Train (practicing His way), and Multiply (helping others). As you look at the story in Matthew 4:18-22, which of these four movements stands out to you the most, and why?

Question 2 — PERSONALIZE

Pastor Russell said, “A top three problem that exists among modern-day American Christians is that so many of us want Jesus to improve our lives without interrupting our lives.” Where does this temptation show up for you? Which of the four movements feels the most “interrupting” or challenging to your current way of life?

Question 3 — PRACTICE

Which of the four movements—Belong, Surrender, Train, or Multiply—do you sense Jesus asking you to focus on in this season of your life? What is one specific, practical step you could take this week to begin training in that area?

Leader Instructions

  • Give groups approximately 20–25 minutes for discussion.

  • Encourage everyone to participate. Good conversation is more important than completing every question.

  • If a significant need surfaces, encourage group members to pray for that person right then.

4. COME BACK TOGETHER | 10–15 MINUTES

Bring everyone back into the larger group.

Ask:

“What was one thing that stood out from your conversation?”

Allow several people to share. Listen for themes related to the four movements and connect them back to Jesus’ invitation to “Follow me.”

5. PRACTICE + PRAYER | 10–15 MINUTES

Return briefly to the practical response from Question 3.

Ask the group:

“Based on what we’ve talked about tonight, what do you want to carry into this week?”

Encourage concrete rather than vague responses. If helpful, have people complete this sentence:

“This week, I will ____________________________________.”

Then pray together about what surfaced during the evening.

Prayer Prompts

  • Thank God that He is the one who approaches us and invites us into life with Him, right where we are.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to show each person the specific area where they need to surrender or train this week, and for the courage to take the first step.

  • Pray for opportunities to help others belong at Neartown and for boldness to multiply the good news of Jesus in our city.

Leader Note: Prayer doesn’t have to wait until the end. If someone shares something significant at any point during the evening, consider asking: “Can we pray for you about that right now?”

LEADER TOOLBOX

Key Sermon Insights

  • System Principle: “Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it is getting.” If we’re not seeing the spiritual fruit we desire, we need to examine our “system” for following Jesus, not just try harder.

  • Belonging vs. Attending: Biblical belonging is more than occupying the same room. It means moving from “me” to “we,” building relationships where we are known, loved, and challenged to follow Jesus together.

  • Surrender vs. Admiration: Jesus doesn’t just ask us to admire him or take his advice. His call to “Follow me” is a claim on our entire lives—our money, time, relationships, and future.

  • Training vs. Trying: We often try to follow Jesus in moments we haven’t trained for. Training involves building daily habits (like prayer, Scripture, generosity) that make us available to the Spirit’s transforming work before a crisis hits.

  • Discipleship Has an Outward Direction: From the beginning, Jesus trained his disciples not just for their own maturity, but so they could help others experience the peace of life with him.

Memorable Lines

  • “People are changed as they follow Jesus in real life, and over time, they help others do the same.”

  • “So many of us want Jesus to improve our lives without interrupting our lives. We want His peace without His authority.”

  • “Belonging to a group cannot transform you. Only Jesus can. But Jesus often does His transforming work through relationships.”

  • “Do you need to stop merely trying and begin training?”

Gospel Connection

We don’t surrender, train, or multiply to earn God’s love. We do it because of God’s love. The one calling us to surrender everything is the one who first surrendered everything for us. Jesus humbled himself, became a servant, and was obedient to death on a cross. Because of his sacrifice and resurrection, we are forgiven and accepted. Our response flows from a place of security and gratitude for what he has already done.

Support + Challenge

SUPPORT:

Remember, Jesus calls ordinary, busy people just as they are and then promises, “I will make you…”—He is the one who does the transforming work in you.

CHALLENGE:

Which of the four movements have you been avoiding, and what would it look like to take one small step of obedience in that direction this week?
