Our Perspective on How We Should Approach Sexuality and Belonging

At Neartown, we believe every person has immeasurable worth, because every person bears the image of God. Our goal is that every guest and member — whatever their story or current beliefs — feels genuinely seen, valued, and loved as they explore what it means to follow Jesus.

1. We Lead with Relationship

Jesus met people where they were, inviting them close and offering grace long before they agreed with Him. We want to follow that example — building a culture of listening, friendship, and dignity, where anyone can belong before they believe, and ask honest questions without fear of shame.

Every person's story of desire, struggle, and longing matters deeply to God. But none of it truly defines us. Our identity isn't found in who we're attracted to or the labels we give ourselves — it's found in the One who created and redeems us. At Neartown, we want to help people discover that belonging to Jesus is the foundation of who they are, and that relationship with Him reorders every part of us in love.

2. We Hold to Biblical Convictions

We believe Scripture teaches that marriage is a covenant between one man and one woman, and that sexual expression is designed by God for that covenant. We recognize faithful Christians have wrestled with these questions in different ways, and we welcome that process of honest reflection and prayer.

We aren't an "affirming" church in the contemporary sense — but we are committed to being a welcoming one, holding truth and love together with humility and grace.

3. We Walk in the Tension of Grace and Truth

Many in our church — including guests who identify as LGBTQ+ — are thoughtfully exploring questions of faith and identity. We want those journeys met with compassion, not fear. People can walk through our doors holding different convictions on this, and loving someone well doesn't require agreeing on every point. We're called to love each other wholeheartedly even across differences, trusting the Holy Spirit to do His work in His timing.

4. What This Looks Like in Practice

You'll find people at Neartown following Jesus in all kinds of ways — including some who experience same-sex attraction and are walking faithfully with Christ, and others still asking hard questions. That's what discipleship looks like. Our commitment is to walk with people, not label them — through conversation, prayer, and community, creating space for everyone to find the rest that's found only in Jesus.

5. We Pursue Unity in Mission, Not Uniformity

Becoming a Mission Partner at Neartown isn't signing a statement of agreement on every issue — it's joining a shared mission: inviting busy people into the peace of life with Jesus. We distinguish between essentials (the core doctrines of historic Christian faith) and nonessentials (where sincere believers may differ). Our unity comes from shared devotion to Christ, not uniformity of opinion.

As Rupertus Meldenius put it: "In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity."
